Introducing Content Briefs: know what to publish to earn the citation

Content Briefs turn the gaps in your Share of Answer into a ranked list of pages to write or fix, built from the sources engines already cite.

Today we’re releasing Content Briefs, available on every Cited plan. Briefs answer the question customers ask most after their first month with us: we can see where we’re missing, so what should we publish?

From gap to brief

Every brief starts from a group of tracked prompts where competitors are cited and you aren’t. Cited collects the pages the engines currently cite for those prompts, compares what they cover, and checks it against what your site already says. The result is a one-page brief your writers can work from.

  • The prompts the brief targets, with current Share of Answer by engine

  • The cited pages it competes with, and what each one covers

  • Questions the cited pages answer that yours don’t

  • A suggested structure: headings, a short summary block and comparison tables where they help

  • Whether to update an existing page instead of creating a new one

Ranked by what you can win

Not every gap is worth closing. Briefs are ranked by opportunity: how many prompts a brief covers, how concentrated the current citations are, and whether engines already cite your domain for related questions. Prompts where a single page takes most of the citations rank lower, because in our data they move slowly.

What we saw in beta

Forty-two teams used Content Briefs in beta from June through August. Pages published from a brief earned a citation from at least one engine within 30 days in 61% of cases, compared with 23% for other new pages on the same sites. The median time to first citation was 16 days.

The gap came less from writing quality than from coverage. Briefed pages answered more of the specific questions buyers ask, and answered them near the top of the page. Aisha Bello, VP of marketing at Fernwork, put it this way:

The brief told our writer which six questions to answer and which two pages we were up against. Perplexity cited the page nine days after it went live.

Getting started

Open any prompt group and select Create brief. Briefs export to Notion, or straight to your CMS as a draft if you use Contentful, WordPress or Framer. Tell us which tools your team writes in, and we’ll use that to decide which exports come next.
